Khalifah News
War in Iraq:
This 19:00 GMT hour-long Bulletin included a good deal of coordination
as it involved a number of satelite links with the USA, Britain, Iraq as
well as other parts of the world. As Bulletin editor, my duties included
putting wide-ranging questions to my interviewees and studio guests on
such issues as the development of the war and its impact on region as
well as its implications for the global war on terrorism.
When Baghdad fell on 9th April 2003, I provided a continuous running
commentary (live) on the events unfolding in the Iraqi capital and talked
to a number of political analysts and journalists, both Iraqi and foreign.
My duties also included editing and presenting other bulletins during
which current affairs were discussed with political analysts, military
experts as well as our own correspondents in the Arab world, mainly
those stationed in Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan and Iran.
Arab League Summit (Sharm el-Sheikh) and Union of Maghrib States Summit (Algiers)
While covering these two major events, I conducted
a number of live in-studio discussions as well as via satelite with
politicians and analysts. The thorny and sensitive question of
sovereignty over the Western Sahara, which was on top of the Maghrib
Summit agenda, was discussed with representatives of
the conflicting parties.
The Algerian President’s State Visit to Spain
As Khalifa News did not have a correspondent in Spain, I had to go there
to cover this important event. During the four-day visit, I provided live
coverage of the highlights of the visit. I also sent daily wraps for the
main evening bulletin. I secured interviews with President Bouteflika,
Prime Minister Jose Aznar as well as a number of Algerian ministers
accompanying the president.
Liqa’ Khas (Special Guest)
In this hour-long weekly program a number of “hot” issues were
normally discussed live. These included such issues as: Terrorism
in the Fertile Crescent, Euro-Maghrib Cooperation, The Arab States
and the war on International Terrorism, The Establishment vs Islamic
Fundamentalism in the Gulf States and others.
Guest interviewed include:
The Algerian Foreign Minister,
ex-Deputy President of Iraq Taha Yasin Ramadan
General Tawfeek Al-Yassiri .
Oct 97 – Sept 02 Arab News Network (ANN)
Al-Massa’iya (Evening News)
My duties included: editing and presenting this fifty-minute Monday
to Friday evening bulletin. The bulletin normally invites a guest who
would sit throughout the bulletin, commenting on the major issues
raised in the program. A good deal of coordination is required as the
bulletin also relies on phonos and satelite links with ANN
correspondents as well as a range of commentators.
ANN News Bulletins
As the Network broadcasts news bulletins every hour on top of the hour
I sometimes edit and present a number of these 15 to 20 minute
bulletins. These short bulletins may include one or more phonos,
depending on the news breaking at the time.
UK Affairs
Besides the above, I was also in charge of the UK and European desk.
This meant that I sometimes had to travel to Belfast, Brussels and Paris
to cover important events. Considerable effort was made to provide
accurate and “viewer-friendly” coverage of peace talks in Northern
Ireland, which many Arabs consider too complex and involved.
Bisaraha (Frankly Speaking)
This program is normally presented by a colleague of mine. Because of
his frequent trips abroad I was commissioned by the Editor-in-Chief to
sit in for him. In total I presented fourteen episodes. This program is
especially designed to tackle controversial issues related to everyday
life in the Arab world. The issues taken up included: mixed education in
Islamic countries, Europe and the veiled Arab woman, Female
circumcision in the Arab world, etc.
Global Exchange
I presented a number of episodes of this 60-minute program which is
transmitted from Washington D.C. My duties included discussing a
variety of current affairs with two US experts.
September 11
Although there were more than fifteen full-time presenters at the time,
I was especially asked to interrupt my leave of absence to anchor the
developments and impact of this horrific crime. For hours on end, I was
commenting live on Islamic fundamental movements, Bin Laden, the
possible reactions of the US and future relations between America and
the fundamentalist theocracies.
